Article Abstract:
Emil Heitz made important contributions to gentics with his role in the discovery of chloroplasts, heterochromatin and polytene chromosomes in Diptera. Heitz discovered a new method of synthesis of heterochromatin from Diptera tissues. Heitz also discovered the heterochromaticity of identical chromosome sections. Artificial breeding to five different type of Drosophila species was done by Heitz to synthesise heterochromatin. The constant structural characters of polytene chromosomes and constancy of polytene bands were also discovered by Heitz.

Article Abstract:
The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae develops buds as part of its reproduction and the successful development of these buds is dependent on numerous genes. Transposon mutagenesis was used to establish a large collection of lethal disruption mutations. From the collection, 209 mutants with disruptions that cause aberrant terminal bud formation were characterized. In addition, three previously uncharacterized genes were identified as essential genes in bud morphological development.

Article Abstract:
The assemblage of contiguous arrays of cosmids enables the construction of a physical map of the Drosophila melanogaster euchromatic X chromosome. The cosmids are selected by screening a library having DNA isolated from microamplified chromosomal divisions. The map consists of 893 cosmids and covers about 64% of the chromosomal euchromatic part.
