Effects of motorboats and personal watercraft on flight behavior over a colony of common terns

Article Abstract:

The flight behavior of common terns, Sterna hirundo, in response to the presence of a motorboat or a personal watercraft is investigated by correlating the number of birds flying over the colony and the type and distance of the intruding watercraft. Results reveal that racing boats elicit a stronger response and that distance is inversely proportional to the magnitude of the flight response. The implications of these findings on conservation of nesting colonies are discussed.
