Effects of hydrogen and formate on the degradation of propionate and butyrate in thermophilic granules from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor

Article Abstract:

A study of the degradation of propionate and butyrate in disintegrated granules from a thermophilic (55 degree centigrade) upflow anaerobic sludge (UASB) reactor feet with acetate, propionate and butyrate as substrates showed the propionate and butyrate degradations rates in whole granules were 1.16 and 4.0 micromols/minutes/gram of volatile solids, respectively. The stimulation of degradation rates showed no variations when disintegrated granules were supplied with methanogens which utilized hydrogen only or hydrogen and formate. Interspecies formate transfer is not significant for the stimulation of propionate and butyrate degradation.

Effects of magnesium on methanogenic subpopulations in a thermophilic acetate-degrading granular consortium

Article Abstract:

The effects of magnesium ions on the morphology of subpopulations of methanogens were determined. The results showedthat in the absence of magnesium ions, methanogenic rods predominate. As the concentration of magnesium ions increased, the rods decreased while the methanosarcinae increased. At 10 to 30 millimolar magnesium, coccoidal packets predominate, and at higher concentrations, Methanosarcinae single cells replaced packets. Packets could form globular aggregates at low magnesium concentrations, while the single cells could form lamina as magnesium concentration was increased.

Effect of medium composition and sludge removal on the production, composition, and architecture of thermophilic (55 degrees centigrade) acetate-utilizing granules from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor

Article Abstract:

The elimination of granules from an upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) Reactor which has been under steady-state operation for a long period can better the functioning of the reactor through the formation of dense and large granules with improved microbial activities. The reactor was fed with thermophilic-digested sludge and the first 7 months showed no granular formation, after which gradual increase in the concentrations of potassium, phosphate, ammonium and magnesium indicated granule formation.
