Effect of sheep urine deposition of the bacterial community structure in an acidic upland grassland soil
Article Abstract:
A study on the effect of the addition of synthetic sheep urine (SSU) and plant species on the bacterial community composition of upland acidic grasslands is conducted using a microcosm approach. Results reveal that the response of plants and bacterial communities to sheep urine deposition in grasslands is dependent on both the grass species present and the concentration of SSU applied, which might have important ecological consequences for agricultural grasslands.

Counting the uncountable: statistical approaches to estimating microbial diversity
Article Abstract:
Statistical approaches used with macroorganisms may be effective in estimating the biodiversity of microorganisms. In some cases, samples sizes of only 200 to 1,000 clones may be needed. This number of clones can easily be sequenced using high-throughput technology.

Methane-oxidizing bacteria in a California upland grassland soil: Diversity and response to simulated global change
Article Abstract:
The diversity of methane-oxidizing bacteria is investigated in annual upland grassland in northern California, using comparative sequence analysis of the pmoA gene. Three novel pmoA lineages are developed to identify type II methanotrophs commonly found in soils.
