Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate in Legionella pneumophila, an energy source for survival in low-nutrient environments

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to isolate and purify poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB)-like material from two strains of Legionella pneumophila. Characterization procedures were carried out using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectromery. The physiology of PHB formation was investigated under iron-limited and -replete conditions. Results provide evidence that L. pneumophila accumulates substantial intracellular reserves of PHB which promote its long-term survival under starvation conditions.

Isolation of Deinococcus species from commercial oyster extract

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to show that the red colonies found in oyster extract were deinococci with radiation resistance greater than that of Deinococcus radiophilus. The deinococci were isolated from three commercial oyster extracts stored at 4, 20 and 30 degrees C and sampled for total aerobic bacterial counts at appropriate times. Results indicate that the natural habitat of deinococci is an aerobic environment with a slightly elevated saline content, low sugar levels and soluble protein.
