Article Abstract:
The fatty acid profile of 10 Thermus strains were examined for responses to changes in temperature. Results showed that levels of isobranched acids were higher at the higher temperature, while the unsaturated fatty acids were higher at the lower temperature. Based on the relative proportion of fatty acids, three chemotaxonomic groups were formed. Membrane fluidity was also related to fatty acid composition and ratios. The ratio of iso C(sub15:0) to iso C(sub 17:0) was the most significant composition determinant, as well as the relative contributions of anteiso C(sub 15:0), anteiso C(sub 17:0) and anteiso C(sub 17:1).

Article Abstract:
The level of polyols in the conidia of the entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Paecilomyces farinosus decreases with an increase in culture age. The polyol and trehalose levels are highest at 20 or 25 degree celsius. The trehalose level fails to increase with an increase in temperature. The polyol and trehalose levels are unaltered between the pH range of 5 to 10. Low pH causes accumulation of the polyols, glycerol and erythritol in the conidia of P. farinosus, but causes no effect in B. bassiana and M. anisopliae.

Article Abstract:
The fatty acid composition of Thermus sp. strain NC1MB 11245 is elucidated with reference to changes in temperature. A white Thermus sp. strain, NC1MB 11245, shows high levels of anteiso C17:0, anteiso C17:1, normal C16:1 and iso C16:0 with low levels of iso C15:0 + iso C17:0. The absence of carotenoids or an alteration in fatty acid precursor metabolism may be the reason for these differences.
