Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the use of certain fluorochromes as bacterial tagging agents in microbial transport research. Fluorochromes were assessed in terms of stained cell stability and the influence of staining on granular media interaction and bacterial surface characteristics. Fluorochrome 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole was found to have no significant effect on surface characteristics and interaction with sand. However, other nucleic acid fluorochromes examined had greatly affected bacterial cells.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the influence of megahertz frequency ultrasound on Escherichia coli. Members of a panel of stress-responsive biosensors were utilized to carry out the analysis. E. coli transformants were determined on Luria-Bertani agar while two kinds of microbubble caviation nuclei were used. Results indicated that stationary-phase cultures were resistant tot he effects of ultrasound treatment.

Article Abstract:
The impact of bacterial attachment at polarized and nonpolarized metal surfaces was monitored by ellipsometric measurements. A strong inhibition of metal oxide film formation was observed which was attributed to the decrease in oxygen concentration due to the presence of bacteria. It was shown that the irreversible adhesion of bacteria to the surface can be monitored ellipsometrically.
