Effect of canavanine from alfalfa seeds on the population biology of Bacillus cereus

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the biological significance and chemical basis for the inhibition of Bacillus cereus UW85 by alfalfa seed exudate. The colonization and biological control capabililties of mutants resistant to canavanine were also examined. Experimental results showed that canavanine inhibited the growth of B. cereus UW85. Findings also indicated that alfalfa seeds in a cultivar differed in the inhibitory nature of their exudates.

Peptidoglycan from Bacillus cereus mediates commensalism with rhizosphere bacteria from the Cytophaga-Flavobacterium group

Article Abstract:

The frequency at which Cytophaga-Flavobacterium (CF) bacteria coisolated with Bacillus cereus strains from soybean rhizosphere and the mechanism by which Bacillus cereus stimulates growth of CF rhizosphere strains in root exudate media is determined. The results suggest that Bacillus cereus and CF rhizospheria have a commensal relationship in which peptidoglycan produced by Bacillus cereus stimulates the growth of CF bacteria.

Genetics of zwittermicin A production by Bacillus cereus

Article Abstract:

Research identifies genes involved in zwittermicin A biosynthesis, which seem to be related to those involved in peptide and polyketide antibiotics production. Analyses of 4,800 transposon mutants of Bacillus cereus showed that all except nine accumulate zwittermicin A with one producing eightfold more than the wild-type.
