pH regulation of pectate lyase secretion modulates the attack of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides on avocado fruits
Article Abstract:
A pH below 6 inhibits the production of pectate lyases by the avocado pathogen, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. This could explain why the unripe avocado with a pH of 5.2 is resistant to attack, whereas the ripe fruit with a pH of 6.3 is susceptible.

Research has been conducted on pectate lyase. The role of nitrogen source and external pH in secretion of virulence factor pectate lyase has been examined, and the hypothesis that nitrogen source availability and ambient pH are independent signals for genes' transcriptional regulation has been tested.

Effect of ammonia production by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides on pelB activation, pectate lyase secretion, and fruit pathogenicity
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine the importance of ammonia accumulation in the secretion of pectase lyase (PL) by inducing secretion of ammonia by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in the presence of KNO3. The results indicate that ambient pH alkalinization resulting from ammonia accumulation and the availability of ammonia as a nitrogen source independently regulates pelB expression, pectate lyase secretion, and virulence of C. gloeosporioides in the avocado fruit.
