Article Abstract:
Effects of bacterium are studied on transformations of labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Bacteria were grown on glucose in a series of experiments with and without protozoa and bulk organic carbon pools were measured using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to characterize dissolved organic matter on a molecular level. The bacteria were the primary shapers in this study of the complex DOC continuum, suggesting higher trophic levels possibly have less of an impact on the qualitative composition of DOC.

Article Abstract:
A peptide mass fingerprinting (PMF) approach is used to identify enzymes expressed in response to vinyl chloride, ethene, and epoxyethane by Nocardioides sp. strain JS614. It is found that PMF extends the use of matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry as a tool to enhance characterization of biodegradation pathways.

Article Abstract:
A technique for obtaining highly purified endotoxin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), is devised by repurification of commercial or laboratory preparations. The integrity of the purified LPSs is confirmed by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry analysis.
