Dynamic expression of cell-surface antigens probed with Candida albicans-specific monoclonal antibodies

Article Abstract:

IgG hybridomas monoclonal antibodies show that the cells of Candida albicans have a dynamic growth phase-specific expression of cell surface antigens. The cells express the 5C11 and 2E11 antigens throughout their growth and in young hyphae. The terminal regions of the longer hyphae express the 2G8 and 4E1 antigens within three hours of hyphae induction. Growth in a medium containing galactose delays the expression of 2G8 and 2E11. The 5C11 and 2E11 antigens are present between the 68 and 104 kDa bands in immunoblot analyses, while 4E1 and 2G8 are present between the 117 and 104 kDa bands.

Cell wall protein mannosylation determines Candida albicans cell surface hydrophobicity

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the cell surface hydrophobicity (CHS) of Candida albicans using composition analysis of its A9-wt and A9-V10 dell walls. Results have shown that changes in cell wall protein mannosylation, rather than the complete loss of N-linked glycan groups, are sufficient to increase cell CHS. This indicates that exposure of hydrophobic regions on Candida albicans may be due to the abundance of phosphodiester-linked acid-labile mannosyl.

Functional reconstitution of a purified proline permease from Candida albicans: interaction with the antifungal cispentacin

Article Abstract:

The purification of proline permease from Candida albicans to homogeneity and its functional reconstitution into proteoliposomes were assessed for the first time. The purified proline permease produced two bands (67 and 64 kDa) using SDS-PAGE. However, a single band of 67 kDa was produced by native PAGE and Western blotting. The antifungal cispentacin competitively inhibits the binding and translocation of L-proline in reconstituted proteoliposomes.
