Article Abstract:
The use of US federal dollars for research on human embryonic stem (ES) cells has been restricted since 2001 and scientists can only use about two dozen human ES cells lines for research funded with federal dollars, which has hampered progress. To address the shortfall in federal cash for human ES cell research, a number of US states are looking at ways to raise funds to support such studies, and California is leading the way.

Article Abstract:
The characteristics of plant stem cells that are unique and those that are shared by stem cells from the animal kingdom are discussed. The discovery of 'organizing' cells in close proximity to plant stem cells has led to the realization that stem cell niches are found in both plants and animals, even though the multicellular states of plants and animals evolved independently.
