Dominating role of an unusual magnetotactic bacterium in the microaerobic zone of a freshwater sediment

Article Abstract:

Magnetobacterium bavaricum, an unculturable, magnetotactic, rod-shaped organism, in freshwater sediment samples collected from Lake Chiemsee is distinct from other phylogenetically characterized magnetotactic bacteria and comprises 1,000 magnetosomes per cell. A spatial distribution study in the sediment revealed 7 times 10 to the 5th power active cells per cm cubed in the microaerobic zone. Its average volume (25.8 plus or minus 4.1 micrometer cubed) and relative abundance (0.64 plus or minus 0.17%) may account for the Magnetobacterium bavaricum population being 30% of the microbial biovolume.

Application of a suite of 16S rRNA-specific oligonucleotide probes designed to investigate bacteria of the phylum cytophaga-flavobacter-bacteroides in the natural environment

Article Abstract:

Oligonucleotide probes specific for the 16S rRNA of members of the cytophaga-flavobacter-bacteroides phylum accurately identify the bacteria in activated sludge and human feces. The probes are specific for the conserved 319th to 336th amino acids of the 16S rRNA. The application of the probes shows that activated sludge flocs contain many flavobacteria-cytophaga bacteria. The probes identify bacteria belonging to the Bacteroides and the Prevotella family in human feces even in the absence of anaerobic cultivation.

Bacterial community dynamics during start-up of a trickle-bed bioreactor degrading aromatic compounds

Article Abstract:

Three new 16S and 23S rRNA-targeted probes for phylogenetic groups within the beta subclass of the class Proteobacteria were developed for the derivation of a higher taxonomic resolution of the molecular techniques. These were designed in the course of the first-ever application of fluorescent in situ hybridization to examine microbial community structure and dynamics in the fermentor and the bioreactor during start-up, using a laboratory-scale fixed-bed bioreactor degrading a mixture of aromatic compounds.
