Does the high nucleic acid content of individual bacterial cells allow us to discriminate between active cells and inactive cells in aquatic systems?

Article Abstract:

Bacterial cells with high nucleic acid content are responsible for most of the total bacterial production. This was the conclusion of researchers who compared leucine incorporation rates in high nucleic acid content cells and low nucleic acid content cells.

Resistance of marine bacterioneuston to solar radiation

Article Abstract:

A total of 90 bacterial strains were isolated from the sea surface microlayer and underlying waters from two sites of the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. Large interspecific differences among the 90 marine isolates were observed and medium and highly resistant strains accounted for 41% and 22% of the isolates, respectively, and only 16% were sensitive strains.

Marine bacterial isolates display diverse responses to UV-B radiation

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the molecular and biological consequences of UV-B radiation by investigating five species of marine bacteria and one enteric bacterium. The relative contributions of dark- and light-dependent repair systems to recovery were calculated by measuring survival and induction and repair of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers under various light conditions. Results illustrate that there are wide variations in marine bacteria in their responses to UV radiation and subsequent repair strategies indicating that UV-B radiation may influence the microbial community structure in surface water.
