Distribution of genes encoding putative virulence factors and fragment length polymorphisms in the vrrA gene among Brazilian isolates of Bacillus cereus and Bacillus thuringiensis

Article Abstract:

The distribution of genes encoding putative virulence factors, specifically, the Vip3a, BceT, PclA, Sph, NheB and NheC components of the nonhemolytic enterotoxin (NHE) complex and HblA of the hemolysin BL (HBL) complex, in a panel of Bacillus cereus and B. thuringiensis strains comprised mainly of Brazilian isolates are assessed. The variable region of the vrrA sequence for fragment length polymorphisms, which might prove useful for the specific identification of B. cereus and B. thuringiensis, are examined.

Quantitative molecular assay for fingerprinting microbial communities of wastewater and estrogen-degrading consortia

Article Abstract:

A quantitative fingerprinting method, called the real-time terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (real-time-t-RFLP) assay, is developed for simultaneous determination of microbial diversity and abundance within a complex community. The results indicate that the real-time-t-RFLP assay can be a powerful molecular tool for learning about microbial communities in various engineered systems and natural habitats.

Molecular characterization of Brevibacillus lacterosporus and its potential use in biological control

Article Abstract:

Different PCR-based methods that were used to examine the genetic variability of thirty-three strains of Brevibacillus laterosporus including three novel strains isolated from Brazilian soil samples are discussed. Characterization of Brevibacillus laterosporus by different molecular methods reveals an elevated level of genetic polymorphism within the species, indicating that the isolates are clonally related.
