Dishevelled activates JNK and discriminates between JNK pathways in planar polarity and wingless signaling

Article Abstract:

Frizzled proteins (Fz) in Drosophila are associated with distinct developmental processes. Genesis of epithelial planar polarity requires Fz, while DFz2 affects morphogenesis by wingless-mediated signaling. Dishevelled (Dsh) is required in both signalling pathways. The C-terminal DEP protein domain of Dsh is essential in rescue planar polarity defects and induce Jun-N-terminal kinase signaling. Also, the planar polarity-specific dsh allele is mutated in the DEP domain. Experiments show that Dsh discriminates among different Wnt/Fz signals by distinct domain interactions.

The apical determinants aPKC and dPatj regulate frizzled-dependent planar cell polarity in the Drosophila eye

Article Abstract:

A direct molecular link between apical/basal (A/B) determinants and Frizzled (Fz1)-mediated planar cell polarity (PCP) establishment in the Drosophila eye is described. PALs-1 Associated Tight Junction Protein (dPatj) binds the cytoplasmic tail of Fz1 and it recruits atypical (aPKC), which in turn phosphorylates and inhibits Fz1.

Drosophila tumor suppressor PTEN controls cell size and number by antagonizing the Chico/PI3-kinase signaling pathway

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that Drosophila phosphate and tensin homolog (DPTEN) protein controls cell number and size and mediates subcellular organization of the actin cytoskeleton. Data further indicate that DPTEN modulates tissue mass by inhibiting a protein kinase and the insulin receptor substrate homolog Chico.
