Article Abstract:
The assimilation and transformation of phytoplankton-derived organic sulfur compound dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) by bacteria during the microcosm experiment and relation between the changes in DMSP processing and the changes in the composition of the bacterial assemblage during the induced bloom compared to nonbloom conditions are investigated. The results show that the composition of the bacterial assemblage and the contribution of DMSP to the overall dissolved organic sulfur/organic matter pool control how efficiently bacteria assimilate DMSP S and thereby potentially divert it from DMS production.

Article Abstract:
The ability of culturable members of the Roseobacter group to transform dimethyl sulfoniopropionate and other sulfur compounds was investigated. The objective was not to provide detailed physiological characterizations but to examine in a broad way the abilities of isolates to carry out transformations that are important in the cycling or organic and inorganic sulfur in marine environments. Results indicate that the group could mediate a number of steps in the cycling of both organic and inorganic forms of sulfur in marine environments.

Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to determine the sources of sulfur for marine bacteria in the synthesis of sulfur containing proteins, amino acids, and other biomolecules. The results show the baceria obtain sulfur through methanethiol generated in the dimethylsulfoniopropionate degradation process.
