Digestive efficiency and rate of food passage in Oilbird nestlings

Article Abstract:

The South American Oilbird (Steatornis caripensis) raises its young exclusively on fruit. Experiments were conducted, under laboratory conditions, to study the digestive functions of Oilbird fledglings and determine their ability to derive nourishment from their fruit diet. Total balance feeding trials were used to find out the ability of fledglings to metabolize nutrients from an avocado-based diet. Oilbird nestlings were found to be able to efficiently extract high degrees of nutrients, especially nitrogen, from an essentially nitrogen-poor diet.

Fledgling behavior and survival in Northern Tawny owls

Article Abstract:

The fledgling mortality and survival of tawny owls (Strix aluco) have been determined. Telemetry studies of the fledglings were conducted in Central Norway, where the birds are near the northern limit of their range and the population density is low. The results showed that the fledglings in better body conditions have a high degree of survival during the first days after nest departure. Mortality as a result of starvation and predation was also found to be frequent dispersal.

Post-fledging dispersal of Burrowing Owls in southwestern Idaho: characterization of movements and use of satellite burrows

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the use of radiotelemetry to determine the dispersal of Western Burrowing Owl juveniles in southwestern Idaho in 1994 and 1995. The importance of satellite burrows to successful dispersion is discussed.
