Article Abstract:
Bacteria isolated from biofilters used in odor abatement of animal-rendering plant emissions were characterized by whole-cell fatty acid analyses, quinone analysis, and by physiological test profiles. Fatty acid analyses separated 31 isolates into six clusters and five single-member clusters. Of the 11 clusters, two were identified to the species level while the remaining nine were further characterized by their fatty acids, quinone system and physiological reactions. These further tests confirmed the members of six clusters. The results showed that the efficiency of physiological tests could by increased by prearranging the isolates based on chemotaxonomic markers.

Article Abstract:
Samples from diverse upland soil that oxidase atmospheric methane was characterized with regard to methane oxidation activity and the community composition of methanotrophic bacteria (MB). The data indicate that different MBs are present and active in different soils that oxidize atmospheric methane.

Article Abstract:
Bacteria that degrade styrene in biofilters have a Pseudomonas-like fatty acid profile rather than a methyl-branched fatty acid profile. This indicates that Xanthomonas, Bacillus, Streptomyces, or Gordonia are not present.
