Differential importance of trehalose in stress resistance in fermenting and nonfermenting Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells

Article Abstract:

Experimental studies using Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants having defective trehalose metabolism demonstrate the linear correlation between trehalose content and stress resistance, and this correlation exists only in nonfermenting cells. Initiation of fermentation leads to significant loss of stress resistance and a fast accumulation of trehalose. Initiation of fermentation leads to removal of factors responsible for the maintenance of stress resistance, and trehalose content fails to prevent the loss of stress resistance.

Aquaporin expression and freeze tolerance in Candida albicans

Article Abstract:

Aquaporins are members of the major intrinsic protein superfamily of integral membrane proteins that enable the transport of water, glycerol and other solutes across membrane in various organisms. A clear correlation between expression of the Candida albicans aquaporin-encoding gene AQY1 and freeze tolerance is found.

Aquaporin-mediated improvement of freeze tolerance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is restricted to rapid freezing conditions

Article Abstract:

Saccharomyces cerevisiae, better known as baker's yeast, has an improved freeze tolerance by an overexpression of the aquaporin encoding genes. It is found that at different freezing rates, different results are acquired.
