Article Abstract:
Batch cultures of Ralstonia solanacearum were monitored for the expression of LacZ reporter fusions in selected PhcA-regulated genes to determine expression of PhcA-regulated virulence factors during exponential growth. Monitoring of beta-galactosidase synthesis in batch cultures of Ralstonia solanacearum indicated the differential expression of three PhcA-regulated genes with lacZ genomic fusions during the exponential growth phase. Furthermore, the addition of 3-hydroxypalmitic acid methyl ester in the batch cultures produced slight effects in PhcA-regulated gene expression and motility.

Article Abstract:
An autoregulatory system has been found to be responsible for the expression of virulence genes in single cells of the phytopathogenic bacteria Ralstonia solanacearum. This bacteria utilizes an environmentally sensitive and complex regulatory network that produces and senses 3-hydroxypalmitic acid methyl ester. This results in a variety of symptoms that leads to the lethal wilting of the host plant. Acidic high-molecular-mass extracellular polysaccharide has been discovered as the main virulence factor in the rapid pathogenic systemic colonization of tomato plants.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the genetic and biochemical preparation of a soil isolate of Burkholderia cepacia associated with its production of a unique antibiotic active against a variety of soil fungi. The antibiotic was a new lipopeptide related with the cell membrane. Samples to be assayed were prepared in a vacuum centrifuge while positive-mode fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry was carried out with the JEOL SX/SX 102A tandem mass spectrometer.
