Development of bacterium-based heavy metal biosorbents: enhanced uptake of cadmium and mercury by Escherichia coli expressing a metal binding motif

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the preparation of a gene coding for a de novo peptide sequence supporting a metal binding motif. The gene was expressed in Escherichia coli as a fusion with the maltose binding protein. Heavy metal removal by cells expressing the peptide was examined. Experimental results indicated that the metal binding peptide fusion supported enhanced binding of Cd2 and H2+ than bacterial cells with no metal binding peptide.

Involvement of an extracellular H2O2-dependent ligninolytic activity of the white rot fungus Pleurotus ostreatus in the decolorization of Remazol brilliant blue R

Article Abstract:

The white rot fungus Pleurotus ostreatus exhibits H2O2-dependent ligninolytic activity of Remazol brilliant blue R (RBBR) oxygenase. Cysteine, NaN3, and NaCN inhibit activity of the enzyme. Therefore, the enzyme seems to have a catalytic metal center, probably heme. The enzyme shows maximal activity between pH 3.5 and 4. It is not dependent on manganese and veratryl alcohol. The enzyme functions also in the absence of RBBR.
