Article Abstract:
Several techniques for the assessment of bacterial numbers and activity in marine waters were compared utilizing samples from a number of marine environments, from aged offshore seawater to rich harbor water. Samples were simultaneously tested for binding to a fluorescently labeled universal 16S rRNA probe; 3H-labeled amino acid uptake via autoradiography; nucleoid-containing bacterial numbers by modified 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole staining; staining with 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chloride; and total bacterial counts taken as reference.

Article Abstract:
Newly identified SAR202-related 16S rRNA gene sequences are used to further resolve the phylogeny of the cluster and to design taxon-specific oligonucleotide probes for fluorescence in situ hybridization. On average, members of the SAR202 group accounted for 10.2 percent of all DNA-containing bacterioplankton between 500 and 4,000m.
