Microcystin production by Microcystis aeruginosa in a phosphorus-limited chemostat
Article Abstract:
Microcystis aeruginosa produces more microcystins when the amount of phosphorus is limited. Microcystin is a hepatotoxin produced by this cyanobacterium.

Seasonal variation and indirect monitoring of microcystin concentrations in Daechung Reservoir, Korea
Article Abstract:
Researchers describe a method for indirectly estimating microcystin levels in water by analyzing the phytoplankton number, chlorophyll-a concentration, ratio of the particulate and dissolved forms of N and P and the particulate N/P ratio. Microcystins are hepatotoxins produced by the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa.

Detection of toxigenicity by a probe for the microcystin synthetase A gene (mcyA) of the cyanobacterial genus Microcystis: comparison of toxicities with 16S rRNA and phycocyanin operon (phycocyanin intergenic spacer) phylogenies
Article Abstract:
A PCR probe for the N-methyltransferase (NMT) domain of the microcystin synthetase gene mcyA can distinguish toxic from non-toxic strains of Microcystis. In a study of 37 Microcystis cultures, 18 toxic strains tested positive for the NMT domain and 17 non-toxic strains tested negative.
