Detection and typing of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli and analysis of indicator organisms in three waterborne outbreaks in Finland
Article Abstract:
Research describes the analyses of three waterborne outbreaks caused by Campylobacters and their comparison with those isolated from environmenal and patient samples by typing for heat-stable Penner serotypes. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis method is employed to analyze genotypic similarities and to evaluate any association between water contamination and illness.

Article Abstract:
Results show that 41% of the 139 surface water samples are positive for at least one of the enteropathogens tested. The positivity for the enteropathogens in winter season than during other sampling seasons. However, there was no significant differences in the occurrence of enteropathogens in river and lake samples.

Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolates from poultry, cattle, and humans which were studied using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and PCR of candidate livestock-associated marker genes showed no association between marker genes and livestock-associated isolates.
