Article Abstract:
A strain of Enterobacter cloacae, PB2, is able to grow under aerobic conditions with the explosive pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) as the only nitrogen source. The strain contains an NADPH-dependent PETN reductase which liberates nitrogen from PETN. Mass spectrometry reveals that the enzyme produces pentaerythritol tri- and dinitrates. The purification of the reductase using ion-exchange and affinity chromatography reveals it to be a monomeric flavoprotein.

Article Abstract:
The nucleotide sequence of the heroin esterase gene (her) of Rhodococcus sp. strain H1 was analyzed to determine the biochemical characteristics of the microbial enzyme. The Rhodococcus sp. her gene encodes a heroin esterase that belongs to the type B serine esterase family. Furthermore, the purified hydrophobic polypeptide from her-expressing Escherichia coli cells was also composed of 8.5% aromatic residues and 70% uncharged residues.

Article Abstract:
Researchers have created a whole-cell system for producing the analgesic hydromorphone that includes a soluble pyridine nucleotide transhydrogenase from Pseudomonas fluorescens that regenerates NAD and NADP. This is important because many reactions of commercial interest involve NAD and NADP and the cofactors are expensive. Any process that could regenerate the cofactors would be of great commercial use.
