Article Abstract:
The degradation process of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium resembles that of the bacterial systems. As compared to the degradation of 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl, degradation of 4,4'-dichlorobiphenyl (DCB) is more and also it mineralizes partially. The DCB degradation products are 4-chlorobenzoic acid and 4-chlorobenzyl alcohol.

Article Abstract:
Examination of the function of bacterial glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in the degradation of 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB) and herbicide alachlor reveals that CDNB-GST activity is higher in gram-negative bacteria than that in gram-positive strains. High levels of gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase account for fast metabolism of CDNB-glutathione conjugates. Few species exhibit alachlor-GST activity.

Article Abstract:
Methanotrophic bacteria in rice paddies can only outcompete heterotrophic bacteria for oxygen at low oxygen and acetate concentrations. This means that methane oxidation by methanotrophs does not take place directly at the root surface.
