Defenses against oxidative stress in Neisseria gonorrhoeae: A system tailored for a challenging environment

Article Abstract:

New advances are presented in the understanding of defense systems against oxidative stress in Neisseria gonorrhoeae and it is found that some of its defenses have similarities to the paradigm established with Escherichia coli but there are also some other key differences. These differences include the presence of a defense system against superoxide based on manganese ions and a glutathione-dependent system for defense against nitric oxide that is under the control of a novel MerR-like transcriptional regulator.

Phytophtora cactorum can synthesize substances needed for sexual reproduction but requires a stress factor to trigger the process

Article Abstract:

Phytophtora cactorum can synthesize various compounds that prepare this phythiaceous fungus for sexual reproduction. Cultures of P. cactorum were subjected to various stress factors ranging from nutrient deprivation to osmotic pressure to growth retardation. Results show that stress stimulate oospore development in P. cactorum. Further, extracts from the culture media of stressed colonies were also shown to stimulate oospore development.

Crosses between sexual and apomictic dandelions (Taraxacum): the breakdown of apomixis, II

Article Abstract:

Results demonstrate that the two components of apomixis namely diplospory and parthenogenesis can be uncoupled. Data further reveal that genetic control of apomictic process in dandelions is influenced by several genetic loci.
