DNA methylation with a sting: An active DNA methylation system in the honeybee

Article Abstract:

A genome sequence of honeybee Apis mellifera has shown it to be the first insect with a full complement of DNA methyltransferases which are catalytically active and that Apis genes can be methylated in specific patterns. These results establish bees as a model to analyze the function of DNA methylation system in invertebrate organisms and might also be helpful in understanding evolutionary aspects of DNA methylation in higher eukaryotes.

The dice of fate: The csd gene and how its allelic composition regulates sexual development in the honey bee, Apis mellifera

Article Abstract:

The 20 percent of known animal species are haplodiploid, which have unfertilized haploid eggs, developed into males and fertilized diploid eggs into females. Heterozygosity generates an active protine that initates female development while hemizygosity results in a non-active CSD protein and default male development.

Shuttling between species for pathways of lifespan regulation: A central role for the vitellogenin gene family

Article Abstract:

Research suggests that lipid storage and transport is a common theme related to longevity in humans, honeybees and nematodes. The findings indicate that the vitellogenin family is a potential key connection between lipid metabolism and the insulin/IGF-1 signaling pathway.
