Cultivation-dependent and -independent approaches for determining bacterial diversity in heavy-metal-contaminated soil
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on diversity of culturable part of microbial communities and of that obtained from soil samples by rRNA gene amplification. The authors describe the use of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis to compare the diversity between these microbial communities, and report the results.

Remarkable diversity of phototrophic purple bacteria in a permanently frozen Antarctic lake
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on phototrophic purple bacteria from the permanently frozen Antarctic Lake Fryxell. The authors have investigated the biodiversity, ecology and metabolic activity of these phototrophs, and report that this lake is inhibited by a broad diversity of purple nonsulfur bacteria.

Cyanobacterial diversity in natural and artificial microbial mats of Lake Fryxell (McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica): a morphological and molecular approach
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on Antarctic cyanobacteria. The authors have investigated genotypic and phenotypic diversity of natural cyanobacteria from Lake Fryxell microbial mat sample and artificial cold-adapted cyanobacteria via the use of inoculum from the same mat.
