Article Abstract:
The contribution of microbial groups on the process of sedimentation in Lake Michigan was analyzed by molecular, microbiological and chemical techniques. Group-specific hybridization indicated the presence of crenarcheota in the oxic regions of Lake Michigan's sediments indicating the presence of anaerobic metabolism. However, crenarcheota were also detected in the anaerobic regions of the lake. Furthermore, the crenarcheotal group was more abundant in the oxic regions of the lake than in the anaerobic regions.

Article Abstract:
The predominant pathways for carbon cycling within an orange mat in Green Canyon (GC) block GC 234 in the Gulf of Mexico is ascertained. The results suggest that integration of microscopy, lipid biomarkers and stable isotope analysis, and molecular DNA analysis is an effective approach for understanding the community structure and ecological functions of microorganisms in natural environments.
