Article Abstract:
Progress has been made in what is known about the nature of the basic-helix-loop-helix-PAS (bHLH-PAS) protein subfamily. Ways by which bHLH-PAS proteins regulate lineage-specific gene transcription have been studied. They affect development of the Drosophila CNS midline cells and respiratory system. The bHLH-PAS/Arnt regulatory cassette has implications that relate to evolution. Regulation of cell lineage-specific development has been investigated as has transcription by bHLH-PAS proteins. Underlying mechanisms may exist in invertebrates and vertebrates.

Article Abstract:
The role of the Spineless (Ss) basic helix-loop-helix-PAS (bHLH-PAS) transcription factor in controlling dendrite morphogenesis is described as well as the contributions of other regulatory proteins is reviewed. It is concluded that Ss employs a variety of biochemical mechanisms to control a multiplicity of developmental and physiological processes.
