Contribution of anaerobic protozoa and methanogens to hindgut metabolic activities of the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana
Article Abstract:
Anaerobic protozoa and their endosymbiotic methanogens have a pronounced effect on the growth and development of the American cockroach. Cultures which did not have the normal hindgut flora showed marked decreases in adult body weight, hindgut volume and methane production. Culture generation time increased. These effects were not completely reversible. Methane production still occurred in the absence of the protozoans but at much lower levels. Elimination of the methanogens resulted in drastic reduction of methane production, but recovery was possible after a few weeks.
