Article Abstract:
Measuring contact angle may be useful in determining the proportion of hydrophobic cells and hydrophilic cels in collections of anaerobic bacteria. The hydrophobicities indicated by contact angle were related to the ratio of hydrophobic and hydrophilic cells in granular sludge from upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactors. The hydrophobicities of the cells depended upon conditions of the reactor and granules contained layers of cells with different hydrophobicities.

Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the potential of an oxygen-limited autotrophic nitrification-denitrification (OLAND) system with a nitrifying sludge as the biocatalyst. Results demonstrated that with low oxygen concentrations, nitrite oxidizers were strongly inhibited. Findings indicated that autotrophic conversion of NH4+-N to N2 in the OLAND system may be influenced largely by ammonium oxidizers and not by nitrite oxidizers.

Article Abstract:
The cellular constitution of granules of microbes in upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactors appears to be affected by the degree of surface tension. At low surface tension granules seem to consist of a core hydrophobic acidogens surrounded by an outer layer of hydrophobic methanogens. At high surface tension, granules seem to consist of hydrophobic acidogens with acidogens mixed within the granules.
