Conserved themes but novel activities in recombinases and topoisomerases

Article Abstract:

Type 1B topoisomerases and tyrosine recombinases have common structures and mechanisms that suggest a link between them. For instance, the mechanism of the two enzyme families involves the formation of a covalent 3' phosphotyrosine DNA-enzyme intermediate in a reaction independent of magnesium ions. The vaccinia enzyme consists of several motifs that are conserved among type 1B topoisomerases. The vaccinia enzyme also can resolve Holliday junctions and has a strict site selectivity, properties commonly observed in recombinases.

Four novel Teloaneuploids of Plantago lagopus L

Article Abstract:

Plantago lapus disomic and primary trisomic crossage yielded a progeny called teloaneuploids that bore an extra telocentric chromosome. The additional chromosome did not match morphological descriptions for the 12 standard chromosomes. In addition, the chromosome was considered an evolutionary product of pericentric inversion and misdivision of the centromere in chromosome 6.

A novel mineral flotation process using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans

Article Abstract:

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans could be used to remove pyrite from a mineral solution. When added to five sulfide minerals in suspension, the bacterium reduced the floatability of pyrite from 90% or greater to less than 20%. The other four minerals were unaffected.
