Article Abstract:
The conservation of plasmid-encoded debenzothiophene desulfurization genes in several rhodococci was examined. The study used cloned sulfur oxidation genes for dibenzothiophene from prototype Rhodococcus sp. strain with probes derived from IGTS8 sox genes. Results suggest a first indication of the conservative nature of the sox genotype. Furthermore, differences and similarities among desulfurization strains were established.

Article Abstract:
The replication region of the sox-containing plasmid, pSOX, indigenous to Rhodococcus sp. strain X309 was determined to find out still unknown factors or membrane characteristics needed for uptake or transport and subsequent desulfurization of sulfur-containing compounds. A shuttle plasmid was formed and the usefulness of the sacB promoter in the expression of the Bacillus subtilis levan-sucrase-encoding gene was examined.

Article Abstract:
A bacterial-genome-mined pectate lyase sequence is selected as a template in order to evolve added thermostability and catalytic activity by using an improvised strategy that does not require the construction of a large library of clones. The pectinolytic enzymes, as well as various endopolygalacturonases, are shown to be useful retting or bioscouring reagents for the processing of natural bast fibers and cotton fabric.
