Conditions for protoplasting, regenerating and transforming the calicheamicin producer, Micromonospora echinospora

Article Abstract:

Protocols for Micromonospora echinospora protoplasting, regeneration and transformation have been developed and are described. M. echinospora is an actinomycete that produces the calicheamicin family of antitumor antibiotics. Materials and methods used for sucessful M. echinospora transformation are oultined and conditions necessary for protoplast regeneration are described. These protocolswill facilitate calicheamicin gene cloning and may be applied to other unusual actinomycetes.

Effects of aerobic and microaerobic conditions on anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (Anammox) sludge

Article Abstract:

The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) procedure was observed to be inhibited reversibly by the presence of oxygen. The Anammox procedure is a potential unique alternative for eliminating nitrogen from wastewater. To eliminate ammonium from wastewater, the Anammox technique requires nitrite as the electron acceptor. Hence, complete nitrogen removal can only be attained when part of the ammonium is first nitrified to nitrite.

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 fluxome under various oxygen conditions

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the central metabolic fluxes of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 under carbon-limited (aerobic) and oxygen-limited (microaerobic) chemostat conditions using C-labeled lactate as the sole carbon source. The central metabolism of Shewanella oneidensis was observed to be robust to environmental changes.
