Composition and susceptibility to chlorhexidine of multispecies biofilms of oral bacteria

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the susceptibility of multispecies biofilms of oral bacteria to antimicrobial agents. Objective was to develop multispecies biofilms containing bacteria normally found in supragingival dental plaque and to test their bacterial compositions and their susceptibilities to chlorhexidine gluconate. Results demonstrate that the constant-depth film fermentor can be utilized to grow multispecies biofilms under conditions similar to those prevailing in the oral cavity.

Efficacy of removal of sucrose-supplemented interproximal plaque by electric toothbrushes in an in vitro model

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted where a series of sucrosepulses, followed by rinsing with artificial saliva, was used to model the situation, which occurs in vivo during the consumption of sucrose-rich drinks. Sucrose supplementation during plague development did not affect the removal of bacteria from biofilm exposed to low-energy shear but did not increase their resistance to high-energy shear.

An in vitro study of the effect of fluoridated milk on oral bacterial biofilms

Article Abstract:

Fluoridated milk increases the pH of bacterial biofilms in the mouth and reduces the level of Streptococcus mutans. This bacterium is the principal cause of tooth decay. Milk fluoridation could reduce the risk of cavities in small children.
