Inactivation of a novel gene produces a phenotypic variant cell and affects the symbiotic behavior of Xenorhabdus nematophilus

Article Abstract:

Inactivating the var1 gene changes the behavior of Xenorhabdus nematophilus. The bacterium does not produce antibiotics nor the stationary-phase-induced outer membrane protein OpnB and emerges from the host nematode later than the wild-type bacterium.

Composition and biophysical properties of lipids in Xenorhabdus nematophilus and Photorhabdus luminescens, symbiotic bacteria associated with entomopathogenic nematodes

Article Abstract:

The composition and biophysical properties of lipids in symbiotic bacteria associated with entomepathogenic nematodes such as Xenorhabdus nematophilus and Photorhabdus luminescens were examined. The study made determinations of fatty-acid compositions of total lipids and of the measured fluidity. Results reveal the absence of homeoviscous adaptation of membranes to temperature. Furthermore, liposomes from primary cultures are more ordered as compared to those from secondary cultures.

Phase variation in Xenorhabdus nematophilus

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to analyze phase variation in the symbiotic bacterium, Xenorhabdus nematophilus, which is found in the intestine of entomopathogenic nematodes. Several phenotypic characteristics of the different strains of the X nematophilus bacterium were analyzed to provide a more thoroughly defined phase variation. Results reveal the existence of phenotypic traits, the lack of dye binding and swarming, the inability to produce antibiotic and protease activity and the absence of hemolysis can be used to define phase variant forms of X nematophilus.
