Phylogenetic diversity of bacterial and archaeal communities in the anoxic zone of the Cariaco basin
Article Abstract:
Researchers have discovered a diverse number of microorganisms in anaerobic sediments taken from the Cariaco Basin. The sediments contained Proteobacteria, the Flexibacter-Cytophaga-Bacteroides division, Verrucomicrobia, Fibrobacter, Crenarchaeota, and Euryarchaeota.

Novel eukaryotes from the permanently anoxic Cariaco Basin (Caribbean Sea)
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on eukaryotes. The authors describe the application of the 18S rRNA approach to the anoxic evironment of Cariaco Basin (Caribbean Sea), and report the discovery of the protistan lineages which may retain traits of the early eukaryotic ancestors.

Comparison of vertical distribution of prokaryotic assemblages in the anoxic Cariacio Basin and Black Sea by use of fluorescence in situ hybridization
Article Abstract:
Individual prokaryotic cells from two major anoxic basins, the Cariaco Basin and the Black Sea, are enumerated throughout their water columns using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with the fluorochrome Cy3 or horseradish peroxidase-modified oligonuleotide probes. For both basins, significant differences in total prokaryotic abundance and phylogenetic composition are observed among oxic, anoxic, and transitional (redoxcline) waters.
