Comparison of ribotyping and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA PCR for characterization of Vibrio vulnificus

Article Abstract:

Ribotyping and DNA-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques were evaluated to determine their efficiency or accuracy in identifying Danish and U.S. clinical strains of Vibrio vulnificus. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR and ribotyping via 16S and 23S ribosomal RNA probes of Vibrio vulnificus strains indicated the genetic heterogeneity of the estuarine bacterium. Furthermore, ribotyping efficiently identified U.S. and Danish strains of Vibrio vulnificus compared to RAPD-PCR which was only effective in subdividing ribotypes.

Application of ribotyping for differentiating Vibrio cholerae Non-O1 isolated from shrimp farms in Thailand

Article Abstract:

Ribotyping helps characterize and differentiate various Vibrio cholerae non-O1 strains isolated from shrimp farms in Thailand. Shrimp form location exhibits no correlation with specific ribotype distributions. Cluster analysis of sixty-four ribotypes identified in these strains reveals the presence of two main groups with 10 and 54 ribotypes, respectively. Ribotype exhibits a correlation with O-antigen expression in these isolates. Significant genetic divergence is observed within V. cholerae non-O1, as revealed by ribotype patterns.

Occurrence of Vibrio vulnificus biotypes in Danish marine environments

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the occurrence of Vibrio vulnificus biotypes in Danish marine environments which cause septicemia and wound infections among humans especially in warm weather. Samples of coastal water, sediment, shellfish and wildfish were examined by preenrichment in alkaline peptone water amended with polymyxin B followed by streaking onto modified cellobiose-polymyxin B-colistin agar. Results indicated that the bacterium is largely associated with temperate marine environments.
