Article Abstract:
API 20E strips and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis accurately identify 46.4% of the aquatic bacteria from Cuyahoga River, Ohio, at the genus level and 35.7% at the species level. The accuracy of API NFT strips and FAME analysis is 30.4% at the genus level and 4.3% at the species level. API 20E strips are used to detect Enterobacteriaceae and gram-negative bacteria cultured on MacConkey agar. API NFT strips are used for nonfermenting gram-negative bacteria cultured on modified agar.

Article Abstract:
Bacterial responses to dissolved organic matter (DOM) and inorganic nutrients are examined using nutrient diffusing artificial substrates. Different types of DOM and inorganic nutrients induced various responses among bacterial taxa in the biofilms examined, and these responses were not apparent if they were examined at the community level or if seasonal changes were not taken into account.

Article Abstract:
The architecture of a Sphingomonas biofilm was studied using strain L138, a gfp-tagged derivative of Sphingomonas sp. strain LB126, as a model organism and flow cells and confocal laser scanning microscopy as experimental tools. Sphingomonas sp. strain L138 biofilm architecture consisted of micro-colonies and extensive water channels.
