Article Abstract:
Pressure-induced germination of Bacillus subtilis endospores appears to occur via the same mechanism as nutrient-induced germination. Compounds that inhibit nutrient-induced germination also inhibit pressure-induced germination.

Article Abstract:
Cell cultures of one-atmosphere-adapted species Escherichia coli derived from a K-12 strain MG1655 were analyzed to detect the presence of highly pressure-resistant or barotolerant mutants. Alternating cycles of pressure exposure and outgrowth of surviving Escherichia coli populations produced three barotolerant mutants designated as LMM1010, LMM1020 and LMM1030. The highly barotolerant mutants exhibited increased pressure sensitivity at 10 to 50 degrees centigrade while the MG1655 parent strain exhibited pressure sensitivity at 40 degrees centigrade.

Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the pressure-induced germination of Bacillus subtilis spores at low (100 MPa) and high (500 to 600 MPa) pressures. It was observed that germination was very dependent on temperature with germination at 100 MPa resulting in rapid ATP generation but no ATP was formed with germination at 600 MPa. Results indicate that spore germination can be started by low- and high-pressure treatments but is arrested at an early stage in the latter case.
