Nitrite reductase genes (nirK and nirS) as functional markers to investigate diversity of denitrifying bacteria in Pacific northwest marine sediment communities

Article Abstract:

Research has been conducted on the denitrifying bacteria genetic heterogeneity. The use of the single-copy genes that code for nitrite reductases as denitrifyng bacteria molecular markers is discussed.

Pacific northwest marine sediments contain ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in the beta subdivision of the Proteobacteria

Article Abstract:

Research examines the ecological and habitat based diversity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in acquatic sediments. Data show that methanotrophs predominantly occupy freshwater sediments while beta-proteobacterial ammonia oxidizers are found in marine sediments.

Community structure of denitrifiers, Bacteria, and Archaea along redox gradients in Pacific Northwest marine sediments by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of amplified nitrite reductase (nirS) and 16S rRNA genes

Article Abstract:

Redox gradients in marine sediments probably arise from different metabolic activity of similar bacterial communities rather than from the development of different communities. These gradients occur in the top few millimeters to centimeters of soil.
