Article Abstract:
Findings of a recent study of metazoan development suggest that specific combinations of histone deacetylases and corepressors mediate the gene-specific actions of DNA-bound repressors in multiple organ system development. It was found, surprisingly, that N-coR and a specific deacetylase were required for transcriptional activation of one class of retinoic acid response element.

Article Abstract:
A nuclear pathway that quickly degrades unspliced pre-mRNAs in yeast has been identified. It involves 3'-to-5' degradation by the exosome complex and 5'-to-3' degradation by the exonuclease Rat1p. It is proposed that nuclear pre-mRNA turnover is a novel step in gene expression regulation.

Article Abstract:
The nuclear effectors of the EGFR and Notch signaling pathways with transcription factor Lozenge, directly regulate D-Pax2 transcription in cone cells of the Drosophila eye disc. Specificity of D-Pax2 expression can be changed upon genetic manipulation of the inputs. Relatively small numbers of temporally/spatially controlled signals received by a set of pluripotent cells can set up the unique combinations of activated transcription factors needed to regulate target genes and specify distinct cell fates in the group, finally. Likely similar mechanisms specify pattern formation in vertebrate developmental systems that involve cell-cell communication.
