Article Abstract:

Research describing facultative manipulation of sex ratios in birds is presented. In particular sex ratios among breeding Roseate Terns (Sterna dougallii) are investigated to determine the stage of the life cycle in which sex ratio bias is established.

Colony differences in response to trapping in Roseate Terns

Article Abstract:

A study of parental behavior in response to trapping in Roseate Terns at Cedar Beach, NY, Falkner Island, CT, and Bird Island, MA, revealed that prior to trapping, both males and females remained at over half the Roseate Tern nests in all three locations, while after trapping, birds in all three locations had varying time frames in returning to their nests. The speed of returning to nests in trapped birds was found to be influenced by factors including nest density and predation risk.

Variations in growth of Roseate Tern chicks

Article Abstract:

The Roseate Tern chick's growth parameters were measured at Bird Island, MA, and at Falkner Island, CT, during the 1987-1990 period. The analysis used the chicks' growth parameter differences to study parental performance differences. The average growth parameter differences in the colonies and years were used for analyzing the differences in average environmental conditions. The results supported the hypothesis that chick growth shows parental performance and quality.
