Burkholderia, a genus rich in plant-associated nitrogen fixers with wide environmental and geographic distribution

Article Abstract:

Researchers describe several Burkholderia species that can fix nitrogen and have genotypic and phenotypic characteristics that are different from the other known nitrogen-fixing species, including B. vietnamiensis. This shows that this bacterium has a wide range and can colonize diverse host plants.

Genetic structure of Acetobacter diazotrophicus populations and identification of a new genetically distant group

Article Abstract:

Electrophoresis of metabolic enzymes from 55 Acetobacter diazotrophicus isolates identified seven different isolate types, one of which was highly divergent genetically. Isolates were taken from sucrose-rich plants or sugarcane-associated mealybugs primarily in Mexico and Brazil. Six of the electrophoretic types (ETs) were within a 0.195 genetic distance, and the seventh was at a distance of 0.53. The greater genetic diversity of the nitrogen-fixing Acetobacter in Brazil may reflect less nitrogen fertilizer use.

Coffea arabica L., a new host plant for Acetobacter diazotrophicus, and isolation of other nitrogen-fixing acetobacteria

Article Abstract:

Microbiological research indicates that, contrary to previous research findings, abundant colonies of nitrogen fixing bacteria Acetobacter diazotrphicus exists in coffee plant rhizosphere soils and coffee plant roots. Endophytic diazotrophic bacteria are generally common in coffee roots and soil. Between 15 and 40% isolation frequencies are reported in various soil pH environments. Numerous nitrogen-fixing bacteria were identified as members of the genus Acetobacter.
