Article Abstract:
A heterologous gene probe encoding the alpha and beta subunits of the Pseudomonas cepacia protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase (PCD) was used to determine its homolog in the genome of Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA110. Three cosmid clones having a 2.2.-kb BamHI insert revealed high levels of PCD activity. SacI digestions of one of the genomic clones, pBjG17 gave rise to a PCD mutant of Psendomonas cepacia. The regulation of beta-ketoadipate pathway enzymes is revealed from studies on Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii. This indicates that conservation of the beta-ketoadipate pathway in soil microbes in the rhizosphere could regulate plant-microbe interaction.

Article Abstract:
The hypothesis that high-affinity betaine transport through the betaine choline carnitine transporter betaine choline carnitine transporter (BCCT) system (BetS) from S.meliloti provides an alternative mechanism for Bradyrhizobium japonicum to acquire betaines for osmoprotection is reported. Results reveal that betS expression lets B. japonicum to obtain and accumulate glycine betaine and proline betaine via an osmotically stimulated transport and it was also observed that functional expression of BetS leads to partial restoration of growth impaired by moderate salt stress.

Article Abstract:
Two rhizobial strains, Mesorhizobium loti MAFF303099 and Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA110 produced functional putative haloalkane dehalogenase homologues with new structures and substrate specificities are demonstrated. The dehalogenase activity of resting cells and Northern blot analyses both revealed that the dmlA and dbjA were expressed under normal culture conditions in MAFF303099 and USDA110 strain cells respectively.
