PGC-1alpha a transcriptional coactivator is important for inducing porphyria by fasting as well as amelioration of symptoms by glucose treatment. The sweet treat for porphyria depends on how efficiently glucose is able to tame PGC-1alpha, however, less calorific treatments that target PGC-1alpha in liver can be given directly.
