Article Abstract:
The resistance of Lactococcus lactis subspecies lactis KR5 to bacteriophages is because of restriction and modification (RM) of the phage DNA or by abortive-type phage infection (Abi). The plasmid pBF61 is responsible for the Abi and RM shown by the L. lactis strain KR5 and the strain LM0230 containing a 6.3-kb fragment of pBF61 also displays Abi resistance but phage adsorption is not affected. abiD is a single large open reading frame in the DNA of pBF61 and is responsible for the Abi resistance.

Phi LC3 is used in the packaging of plasmids carrying the cohesive end region from temperate lactococcal bacteriophage phi LC3 in vivo, and is also transduced into its host strain, Lactococcus lactis. In plasmid transductio;n the phi LC3 cohesive site region (cos) plays an important role. It is an efficient method for gene transfer among lactococci, even though it is limited to certain strains.

Researchers isolated the pyc gene from Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis C2 and found that it corrected a Pyc defect in L. lactis KB4. Pyc is pyruvate carboxylase, which participates in a metabolic sequence that ultimately forms aspartate. Strains that lack this enzyme require aspartate in order to grow.
